BUJUMBURA, Oct 31 (AGCNewsNet) - Ethiopia’s President Taye Atske Selassie has arrived in Bujumbura, Burundi, to participate in the 23rd Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Summit, set to commence on October 31. The summit brings together Heads of State and Government from COMESA member nations and serves as a forum for high-level discussions on regional cooperation, economic integration, and policy coordination.
Leading up to the summit, Ethiopia engaged in the 19th Meeting of COMESA Ministers of Foreign Affairs, also held in Bujumbura. The Ethiopian delegation at the ministerial meeting was led by Ambassador Hirut Zemen, the country’s Permanent Representative to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.
According to Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the foreign ministers’ meeting focused on critical issues affecting the COMESA region, such as peace, security, counter-terrorism measures, and climate change adaptation. The talks underscored the need for collaborative regional action to address these pressing challenges and build resilience across member states.
The COMESA Heads of State and Government Summit, known formally as “The Authority,” is the principal decision-making body within COMESA. It holds the authority to set the policy direction for the organization, oversee the executive functions, and ensure the achievement of COMESA’s aims as outlined in the COMESA Treaty.
